Credit Repair Services That Work the Legal Way

Credit repair is the process of reviewing what the three nationwide credit bureaus are reporting about you, identifying information that is inaccurate, unverifiable or obsolete, and holding the bureaus and furnishers to the accuracy obligations the Fair Credit Reporting Act already places on them. That is the whole job. Anyone who describes it as deleting accurate debt is describing something else.

Credit Goliath handles that process for people who do not have the hours, the paperwork discipline or the patience to chase three bureaus and a dozen furnishers on their own. We pull your three-bureau report with you, go line by line, document what does not hold up, and file disputes under §611 with the supporting evidence attached. You keep full visibility the entire time, and you keep the right to do any of it yourself for free.

We cannot promise a score, a point figure or a date, and we will never put one in writing. What we can tell you is exactly which items on your file look challengeable, why, and what the bureaus are legally required to do once a dispute is filed.

What credit repair actually is under the FCRA

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you two things worth understanding. First, the bureaus must follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy in what they report about you. Second, when you dispute an item, §611 requires the bureau to conduct a reinvestigation and generally to complete it within 30 days of receiving your dispute, extendable to 45 days when you send additional information during the window.

That window is a statutory response deadline placed on the bureau. It is not a promise about your outcome and nobody can honestly present it as one. At the end of a reinvestigation the item may be corrected, updated, deleted if it cannot be verified, or left exactly as it was because the furnisher verified it. All four are normal results.

If an item is accurate, current and verifiable, it stays. There is no letter, loophole, statute citation or paid service that lawfully removes accurate information from a credit file. What a competent dispute process does is find the items that are not accurate, not current or not verifiable — and there are usually more of them than people expect.

What we look for when we read your report

Most of the value in credit repair happens before a single letter goes out. A careful read of all three reports side by side surfaces problems that a score alone never shows you.

  • Collections reported by more than one agency for the same original debt, or reported with a balance that does not match the original creditor's record.
  • Late payments logged in months your own statements or bank records show paid on time.
  • Charge-offs still reporting a growing balance, an incorrect date of first delinquency, or a status that contradicts the payment grid.
  • Accounts that are not yours at all — mixed files, similar names, or genuine identity theft.
  • Obsolete items that have aged past the reporting periods in §605 and should have dropped off already.
  • Hard inquiries with no permissible purpose behind them, and duplicate inquiries from a single application.
  • Public-record and bankruptcy entries with wrong dates, wrong amounts or wrong disposition.
  • Personal information errors — old addresses, misspelled names, wrong employers — that let other people's data attach to your file.

How our credit repair process runs

1. Free credit analysis

We start with a call. You bring your three-bureau report, or we walk you through pulling it, and a specialist reads it with you. You leave that call knowing which items look challengeable and which do not, whether or not you ever become a client. There is no credit pull on our side and no obligation to buy anything.

2. Written agreement and disclosures first

Before any work starts you receive a written service agreement, the Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law statement, and your three-day right to cancel. Those are legal requirements under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, and a company that skips them is telling you something about how it operates. Nothing is billed until the agreement is executed.

3. Documented disputes, not form letters

Each challenged item is filed with the specific factual basis and whatever supporting documentation you have — statements, payoff letters, police reports, correspondence. Generic templates get generic results and often get flagged as frivolous. We also dispute directly with furnishers where that is the faster route, because the furnisher is the party that has to verify.

4. Tracking and reinvestigation follow-up

Bureau responses come back inside the statutory window and we read every one. Items verified on thin evidence get pushed again with better documentation. Items corrected get confirmed across all three bureaus, because a fix at one bureau does not propagate to the other two. Items that were legitimately verified get reported back to you honestly instead of being rebilled.

5. Rebuilding the parts of the file you control

Disputes only address what is wrong. Payment history, utilisation, account age and mix are what actually carry a file forward, and those respond to behaviour rather than letters. This is where members often look at seasoned or primary tradelines, and where we are candid that added history helps some files and does very little for others.

Collections, late payments and charge-offs

These three categories generate most of the disputes we file, because they are the three most likely to be reported carelessly.

Collections change hands. A debt sold twice can appear twice, and the second agency frequently reports a different balance, a different open date or a re-aged date of first delinquency. Re-ageing matters more than the balance: the date of first delinquency is what controls when the item must fall off under §605, and resetting it illegally extends the damage by years.

Late payments are often a documentation fight rather than an argument. If your bank record shows a payment cleared inside the grace period and the furnisher logged a 30-day late, that is an accuracy problem with evidence attached, and evidence is what moves reinvestigations.

Charge-offs are supposed to freeze. A charged-off account that keeps adding interest, reports a balance the original creditor no longer claims, or shows a status inconsistent with its own payment history is reporting something that cannot all be true at once.

What we will not do

This matters more than the sales copy. Every item below is either illegal or a lie, and each one is offered somewhere in this industry.

  • We do not file false identity-theft claims or fake police reports to strip accurate accounts off a file. That is fraud, and it is the practice usually sold as a "credit sweep".
  • We do not sell CPNs, EINs used as substitute Social Security numbers, or any form of new credit identity.
  • We do not promise score increases, point totals, deletion counts or completion dates.
  • We do not charge for work before it is performed, and we do not bury the cancellation right.
  • We do not claim a secret statute, a "609 loophole" or a magic letter. §609 is a file-disclosure provision; the dispute right is §611.

Doing it yourself, and when hiring makes sense

You can dispute every item on your own report at no cost, directly with each bureau, and we say so on every page of this site because the law requires us to and because it is true. Your Consumer Credit File Rights statement explains how.

People hire us for throughput and evidence discipline: three bureaus, multiple furnishers, reinvestigation deadlines, escalation letters and documentation, tracked without anything falling through a gap. If your file has two errors and you have an afternoon, handle it yourself. If it has twenty, spread across three reports, with collections that keep reappearing, that is the work we do every day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does credit repair take?

We do not promise a completion date, because the timeline belongs to the bureaus rather than to us. Under FCRA §611 a bureau generally has 30 days to complete a reinvestigation, extendable to 45 days if you supply additional information during that period. Files with many items typically run through several dispute cycles, and how many cycles are useful depends on what the furnishers verify.

Can you remove accurate negative items from my credit report?

No. Accurate, current, verifiable information stays on your report until it ages off under FCRA §605. Any company telling you otherwise is either lying or planning to commit fraud on your behalf. Our work is limited to legitimate disputes of information that is inaccurate, unverifiable or obsolete.

How much does credit repair cost, and when do you charge?

Pricing depends on how many items and how many bureaus are involved, and you get an exact figure in writing in the service agreement before anything begins. Under the Credit Repair Organizations Act we cannot bill for services before they are performed, and you keep a three-day right to cancel after signing.

Will disputing hurt my credit score?

Filing a dispute does not by itself lower a score, and a dispute is not a hard inquiry. An account can be flagged as disputed while a reinvestigation runs, and some manual underwriters look at that flag, which is worth knowing if you are mid-application on a mortgage. We will talk through timing if you have a loan in progress.

How long do negative items stay on a credit report?

Under FCRA §605 most adverse items may be reported for seven years from the date of first delinquency, and Chapter 7 bankruptcy for ten years from the filing date. Because that clock runs from the original delinquency, an item that has been re-aged by a later collector may be reporting past its lawful period — which makes it disputable.

Do I have to be in Washington, DC to work with you?

No. We are headquartered at 1250 Connecticut Ave NW in Washington, DC and we work with clients across the DMV and nationwide. The entire process runs remotely through a secure member portal, so there is nothing to visit in person.

What do you need from me to get started?

Your three-bureau credit report, a government photo ID, proof of address, and whatever documentation supports the items you believe are wrong — bank statements, payoff letters, correspondence, or an FTC identity-theft report if you are a genuine fraud victim. Better documentation produces stronger disputes.

Can you guarantee results?

No, and it would be illegal for us to. The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits a credit repair organisation from guaranteeing outcomes, and results vary with what is actually in your file and what furnishers can verify. What we commit to is honest reading, documented disputes and straight reporting on what came back.
